Bridging education & industry

Ensuring young people are the beneficiaries of the future

The mission

We want to establish an ecosystem of businesses, professionals, schools and colleges creating a direct network that connects local businesses, SMEs, startups, entrepreneurs and tradespeople with local young people in education.

We aim to broaden horizons, unlock potential and drive long-term social and economic impact, helping businesses tap into emerging talent while equipping the next generation with real-world experience.

The goals

Anchor local prosperity by ensuring major development projects create long-term social and economic impact within the borough

Provide local students with access to real-world, entrepreneurial and professional environments

Deliver measurable social value and create a direct, managed talent pipeline that supports corporate and local government ESG targets

Solve the T-Level Placement Mandate by providing high-quality, long-duration placements (315+ hours) in professional sectors (eg planning, finance, property)

The impact

Students miss out on practical experience and exposure to the workplace

Colleges struggle to meet *Gatsby Benchmark 6 (meaningful encounters with employers)

Businesses lose a chance to connect with emerging talent early on

The local skills gap widens, particularly in creative, digital, and technical fields

The challenge

Across the UK, sixth form colleges face growing difficulty in securing local partnerships for meaningful work experience placements for students. Many SMEs lack the capacity or systems to host young people, while larger employers have reduced programmes post-COVID.

As a result, colleges struggle to meet *Gatsby Benchmark 6, and students - particularly those studying creative and digital subjects - miss out on vital, real-world experience.

Social inequality

Inequality is stark within London boroughs, including those in the south east. Areas like Southwark and Lewisham are among the most deprived in the UK in terms of income deprivation, with high child poverty rates after housing costs are considered.

The solution

Keystone is an essential piece of compliance infrastructure capable of fulfilling specific corporate and local government statutory social value obligations and addressing key talent pipeline demands of local and national business.

It provides structured, long-term work experience placements for students in Lewisham and beyond, starting with Christ The King Sixth Forms, piloted through Blue Garage - an innovation hub based in the centre of Lewisham - representing a critical solution to a national educational challenge that is intrinsically linked to local economic policy.

One of a kind

Nothing like this exists in Lewisham or beyond — and the heart of our borough is about to undergo profound change.

Keystone puts Lewisham’s young people right at the centre of this change and the opportunities it brings, ensuring they benefit from regeneration rather than being pushed to the margins - connecting them directly to the industries shaping their future, and safeguarding their place in the story of the communities they call home.
